Bankinter Spanish Mortgages
Bankinter are the largest provider of resident loans in Spain holding by far the biggest share of the resident mortgage market.
With just over 2.5% of the book in default they also have one of the lowest default percentages in Spain. The average being over 5%. Deput this in early November 2010 their Chief Executive decided to resign. Whether this is because he was pushed or decided to jump is not clear. The bank whose origins were a joint venture between America Corp and Santander is now owned predominately by the largest banking family in Spain.
Bankinter were in partnership with GMAC when self-cert loans were offered in Spain and were one of GMACS largest distributor. This book has now been sold to AG Sarl an investment company and no longer forms part of Bankinters portfolio.
Bankinter are still lending to non-residents but terms are much less attractive than other banks and risk criteria's as tough as other banks. Little reason to use them at present and Bankinter seem quite happy to remain this way in present environment.
